How to adjust / repair your fluctuating Idle.
submitted by David AKA “NYCACCORD”

Does your car go Vrrrm Vrrrm even if you aren’t pressing on the accelerator?

HOW TO FIX: REVVING AT IDLE. with your favorite host ME!! NYCACCORD!!!

You need to do all of this while the car is running and revving up and down. Don’t let it warm up as the motor should be cold for best results - preferably after being turned off for a while.

OK now Turn on the car and do the following:

Only loosen the other so you don’t accidentally drop the top into the engine bay! Believe me it will happen if you take both off.

Inside you will see this:

That ring in the middle controls the air intake or gas but it does not matter.  Take a screw driver and turn that ring clockwise or counter clockwise and you will hear the Rpm's go higher or lower (of course we want them lower.)

So turn it the way that you find makes the revs lower and lower. the more you turn it the more you will hear the engine stabilize. Do it until you have a smooth idle. It works like a charm. I did this about a year ago or more. I have not had the problem since.

Some problems you might experience are:

The problem will slowly come back.

That is because that ring will slowly (with the vibrations of the car) turn it self back where it was and result in the same problem.

So to solve that problem, this is what I did and what you should do: Take a paper clip and bend it so that it can hold both indents on the ring and go over the top so that when you tighten everything back up the paper clip will act like a clamp to keep the ring in place.

Here is how I made mine:

If you can find something stronger than a paper clip that would be great. However, I’ve had the paper clip in mine for about 3 years now and I have never had the problem since.

ABOUT MECHANICS:

I went to about 5 mechanics, and they all had various reasons for the problem: Gaskets, Vacuum Leaks, Gremlins, a thousand reasons with no results until I decided to mess around with my engine : ) and it paid off.

ITS A COMMON PROBLEM:

I hear alot of 4th gens in the streets with this problem, rev rev rev. its so common I should make up flyers with instructions of how to fix it and give them out when I hear a revving 4th genner.

HOW DO I KNOW IT WORKS?:

I did it on my own car, but you don’t have to take my word for it! Check out these testimonials!

electroverride - “I did it halfway. I started the car, and it was doing the up and down thingy again. Then, i slowly moved the ring clockwise till it stopped. I checked my tach, and it was working correctly. I tighted up the cap, and let my car run. THANKS NYC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
